Dear Sweetpotato,

It’s 14 days before Christmas. A posdoc in my lab is very excited about receiving her “Bah Humbug” earrings from Amazon, which is a bit strange to me. How boring is a year without Christmas time, no Christmas songs, no lights,no Santa’s, no holiday decor, no nutmeg hot chocolate, no Nutcrackers, no busy shopping crowds, very depressing indeed, imagine people squeezing out the last drop of their laboring sweat til the last day of the year…wait,this gibberish “Duffle bag boy” song is driving me crazy, who would name their song like that? why not “backpack girl” or “suitcase daddy?” …Anyway, 14 days before Christmas huh? hmm…exciting, Tim’s party, vesper night tomorrow, lab party next Thursday, Robert’s brother and his family the week after that, auntie’s on new year’s eve….then a month after that, Vietnam in early February…can’t wait, such a good time of the year, oh shoot, we still have to finish that 2000piece puzzle laid out all over Robert’s living room from table top to the floor….hope he’s taking care of that by fits and starts.

Let’s talk about Tom

Tom is my boss. His intro to a lab member’s presentation goes like this: “The Schwarz lab’s meeting today is now featuring our rotation student’s project on neural trafficking of…….” or “Let all attention now be focused on the star of the day: Tim Mosca with his world renowned work on protein…..”. His eyes half opened with one brow raised, head tilted dreamily in the direction of his spreading arm toward the power point screen.

There has not been a day I don’t see him laughing. People come into his office smiling and walk out laughing. With his 100% attention and witty jokes and whatever topic you happen to discuss on at that moment, you just can’t walk away not smiling. Sharp wits and whole-hearted comments of course never go wasted in a lab, much pressure is lifted, that for sure, and people’s moods would not “swing” around from one to another, instead, smiles spread and laughs linger. I would come in saying “Tom saw me in the lunch room and claimed that I took the quarter of the leftover pumpkin muffin that he aimed at earlier, allowing him the excuse to double the amount and welcome half of the last muffin instead” , which left my labmate with a fake-puzzling-eyebrows look :” I think I know who stole the last piece of candy last night”. Tom eats very well. Someone says :” Tom always finish 2 pieces of pastries every time we bring Au bon pain for lab meetings. ” “oh yeah, always 2 bagels!!I don’t know how he eats lunch after that”, someone else added. Our lab meetings usually go from 10am every Thursday to noon.

One day Tom had a bicycle accident, his email to the lab was like this :”I’ll be at home most of the day today, but happy to take phone calls. I’ll be out at the doctors a little this AM. Took a very nasty spill on my bike last night (bike meets pothole; rider meets Mt. Auburn street pavement) so I ache all over and will get looked at just in case (though I think it is all bruise and abrasion). I am happy to offer a testimonial to the Bell Helmet Company! And yes, importantly I think the bike is ok – thanks for asking! Will be in for lab mtg tomorrow so dont get any ideas about cancelling. Tom.”

I have no idea what’s going on. I could have sworn I replaced the Xba1 enzyme tube with the Xho1 and now the Xho1 is gone and the Xba1 is smugly sitting in the that box going “haha, you gotta clone them again!!!!” ” what the heckilomino is going on?” Did I use Xba1 or Xho1 to clone my constructs? Hello world!

Why is the title of the first post defaulted as “Hello world”? Isn’t it a ” Hello onlineworld” instead, or, would “hello other bloggers” make more sense.

First, maybe I should jot down the song I came up with before it’s forgotten, Robert listened to the song and said he loved it (or forcefully loved it I have no idea ). Personally, I think it’s a piece of crap, but for keeping sake, let’s score its existence in my collection of many pieces of craps, how about junks, sounds better.
